BALLOONING IN 2000



Many new ideas were realised in the 9th Festival of Ballooning, Baltic Cup 2000, which took place in Tervete for the 2nd time.

One of them was action “Ave Sol” when many Latvian people who had given a great contribution to Latvian culture, art and sport development met day-break in hot air balloon in the sky.

The culmination of the Festival was the Baltic Unity Flight in honour of the 10th anniversary of a Declaration of Unanimity and Co-operation signed by Council of Baltic States. The action was organised by cooperation between Baltic Assembly and festival organisers.

Jurgis Kairys - Lithuanian pilot, Merited Master of Acrobatic Flying, prizewinner of Lithuanian, European and World championships – amazed with his acrobatic skills everybody who was in Tervete.


A new hot-air balloon “Rîga” was added to the Latvian hot air balloon register. In August pilot Gunars Dukste and Altius ballooning team participated in the European Hot Air Balloon Championship in Luxemburg and made flights over Swiss Alps valleys and tops, too.


On the 21st of November for the first time in Latvia was celebrated the Montgolfier's Day. The day when November 21, 1783 human beings flew for the first time at all and they used a hot air balloon. Five Latvian pilots made common flight over Sigulda.
